Tabebuia chrysantha syn Handroanthus chrysanthus - Golden Trumpet Tree - 20 seed
This is a highly ornamental exotic tree that is native and has a widespread distribution from the south and eastern Mexico, along the coast of Ecuador and down to Peru.
Grows up to 24m in its native habitat but usually is smaller in cultivation, about 10 - 15m and is slow growing with grey brown bark with a single trunk.
It is a fantastic deciduous feature tree with a lovely habit, with palmate 5 lobed mid green leaves that are lightly tomentose on the upper surface, the central part of the leaf is up to 17.5cm long.
It puts on a stunning show in late Winter to Spring where the leaves fall and bright yellow fragrant trumpet shaped flowers occur en masse, these are then followed by long hairy seed pods, brownish yellow in colour containing many small light brown winged seeds.
It is best in subtropical climates in full sun and moist fertile soil, tolerates light frost and tolerates coastal conditions.
Note that it can become weedy this can be overcome by pruning the seed pods from the tree each year, also pruning after flowering is a great way to maintain a bushy habit and increase plant vigour.
Makes an excellent shade tree, lawn feature, street tree and a great avenue planting!
