Stylidium graminifolium - Grass Trigger Plant - 25 seeds
This widespread species of Stylidium is on of the more hardy variety and easier to grow in a wide range of climates and soil conditions hailing from the coastal and alpine areas of Eastern Australia usually found growing naturally in dry sclerophyll forest in QLD, NSW, VIC, SA and TAS.
It is a basally tufting herbaceous perennial, grass like in habit with erect, linear leaves 6 - 20cm long and 4mm wide, the beautiful but small pink flowers are about 1cm in diameter and occur on a long reddish stem to 40cm long held above the foliage coming out from the middle of the clump. Flowers are 5 petalled but the 5th is reflexed and held behind the 'trigger' that protrudes from the throat of the floral tube.
The seeds that follow are held in an ovoid capsule that is 5 - 12mm long and inside are many tawny brown coloured seeds.
Seeds are easily germinated without the need for any pre-treatment.
The 'trigger' plants are known as such because of the unusual and irritable flowers coloumn that gets triggered by its insect visitors - the trigger remains cocked up until an insect probes the flower, the trigger then springs up and deposits pollen on the head or the back of the insect which then transfers pollen to another flower. Very interesting to watch!
