Myrtaceae species - No shipment to WA or TAS

This is a fast growing shrub or small tree native to the Caribbean, Central America and South America, growing 1 - 6m tall, growing with a thick dense canopy of leathery, dull green leaves.
Older stems are covered in smooth, reddish brown bark that peels off in flakes, sometimes giving the trunk a mottled appearance, new bark is a greenish brown to tan colour and satiny.
The foliage is oval to elliptic, 7 - 15cm long x  3 - 7cm wide, dull green, leathery with prominent veins. The flowers are borne singly in the upper leaf axils in Spring, 25mm across on a hairy stalk 1 - 2.5cm long, they have 4 - 5 green sepals, 6 - 15mm long and are fused together at the base and 4 -5 white petals that are 10 - 20mm long with many small white stamens, 6 - 10mm, style 6 - 12mm topped with a stigma.
The fruit is globose to ovoid or pyriform, ripening to yellowish as they mature in Autumn, 2.5 - 10cm long with pink, white or yellowish pulp that contains many seeds, seeds are kidney shaped and yellowish in colour. The fruit is delicious, soft and juicy and can be eaten fresh, juiced or as a nectar, made into preserves, jam, jelly or paste.
Pick fruit only when it's ripe and it is an excellent source of vitamin C.
Best grown in full sun in moderately fertile, well drained soil. Feed with a complete fertiliser annually in a few doses during the growing period and give adequate water in the hotter months.
It is best to train as a single leader but underprune when young, thinning the canopy when mature to allow enough light penetration for better fruit, but this is not essential, it will still fruit without pruning.
Makes a great fruit tree in subtropical and tropical regions, shade tree, can be grown in containers and can even be trained as a Bonsai! The wood can be used to make poles, fence posts and tools or firewood.
