Pinus pinea - Italian Stone Pine - 5 seeds

Native to the warmer Mediterranean regions of Europe, this pine can be grown in basically the same climates as our common Pinus radiata pine.  It is a conical evergreen tree with thick branches that is grown for the ornamental orange brown bark and twisty leaves. 
 
This is the pine of Rome and of Renaissance paintings and is also the source of pignolias (pine nuts), eaten worldwide as a flavoursome, protein-rich food.  It can reach 25 to 30m at maturity or be grown as a prized Bonsai subject and makes a different and attractive potted subject while it is young. 
 
Start seed in standard potting mix or Bonsai soil and grow on in fertile well drained soil in full sun to part shade.
