This is Pine tree native to NW Africa and southern Europe, growing up to 30m tall in its native habitat on dry sandy soils, in coastal areas in Morocco grows up to 2000m high in the mountains.
It has a sinuous stem, with an open crown with a candelabra-like upswept branches with a broad ovoid to conic form when young and becoming irregular and more dense with age.
 
The bark is very thick, scaly or plated, fissured and patterened red brown to blackish and buff. The leaves are green to yellow green, sometimes tinged glaucous, spreading and very stout 2 - 2.2mm thick with serrulate margins and stomatial stripes on all sides.
 
The seed cones are slightly deflexed on short stout stalks, are symmetrical, hard and heavy, ovoid to conic, 9 - 18cm long x 4 - 6cm wide when closed, ripening to a rich glossy chestnut brown, opening in Summer.
 
It is frost sensitive but wind resistant.
Best grown in full sun on moist well drained soils.
 
Makes a fantastic Bonsai specimen, shade tree, large garden or park tree.
