This conifer is a fast growing species that is native to coastal areas in the West Mediterranean, also in Northern Africa and Western Asia and has been widely cultivated in the temperate and southern regions of Australia.

It has a single round trunk with smooth bark that is silvery grey becoming purple brown longitudinally grooved and fissured into scaly plates and a rounded or flat crown usually in an irregular shape, slender irregular and horizontal upturned branches.

Grows well on all soils within Mediterranean regions, hot areas that are exposed to frequent forest fires, in lower altitudes and also grows in mountainous areas.

It provides improved water infiltration, prevents soil erosion on dry slopes and acts as a windbreak, it has also been used as a key species to several afforestation programs.

Also makes a great Bonsai specimen!

Due to its irregular shape and poor wood quality it is not useful in the forestry industry, however it is used in the pulp and paper industry as well as for firewood, forest honey production and resin collection.
