This herbaceous aromatic perennial is native to Egypt and the eastern Mediterranean, growing 30 - 60cm tall with a grassy, erect and branched habit and light green soft leaves.
Flowers are yellowish to white and these are followed by small green to yellow seeds which are edible raw or cooked and widely used in traditional medicine, its fruits and essential oils are used in the food industry as a flavouring, as a tea, in alcoholic beverages, is an antioxidant, anti spoilage agent and a preservative.
 
It prefers warm temperate to tropical climates and to be grown in rich, well drained light soil in a sunny position note that it does not like root disturbance so choose your site wisely when planting.
It is a good companion plant and grows especially well with coriander and looks fabulous in the garden, it is also quite ornamental.
Leaves, flowers and seeds are all edible and have a liquorice like flavour..
