Picea abies - Norway Spruce - 50 Seeds

Norway spruce is a fast-growing conifer that can reach 40 to 50m in height and is found naturally in Northern, central and eastern Europe and as far south as Greece.

Picea abies has a pyramidal growth habit when young, becoming columnar when mature.  Bark is orange-brown, finely flaking, becoming grey-brown and scaly on old trees.  Branches are short and stout, the upper level or ascending, the lower drooping, twigs are orange-brown and are usually glabrous.  Buds reddish brown and the seed cones are 12 - 16cm in size, green in colour aging through pinkish red to brown.

It makes excellent Bonsai subject and lends itself to a variety of styles and should be grown outdoors in a bright place with direct sunlight.

Spruce as a family are adapted to a large range of environmental conditions and Picea abies is the most climatically tolerant species in the Picea family, happy in cultivation in many areas and is extremely hardy and wind resistant.
