Mesembryanthemum crystallinum - Salty Ice Plant - 30 seeds

An edible salty succulent with a variety of uses!
This is a robust prostrate succulent or biennial is native to northern Africa, SW Africa, western Asia and southern Europe that grows 5 - 20cm tall with white flowers in Spring to Summer, ovate, spathulate or cordate leaves, 2 - 12cm long x 1 - 9cm wide and are green tinged with pink or red. The plants are densely papilose with large bladder cells that are expecially prominent on the receptacle that gives the plant a sparkling appearance, hence the common name 'Ice Plant'.
Best grown in full sun in well drained, low fertile soil, it is not frost tolerant and can be grown in dry or moist soils.
The leaves and stems can be eaten raw or cooked and used in place of spinach, they have an acid flavour, are thick and very succulent with a slightly salty tang. It can be used as a garnish and pickled and also has some medicinal uses and crushed foliage can be used as a soap substitute.
