Melaleuca violacea is quite unusal in the range of Melaleuca, this species forms a small shrub to about 50cm high to approximately 1.2m in width with a pronounced flat top. The purple flowers occur in lateral clusters on old wood or auxillary clusters in the Spring and early Summer with ovate to lanceolate leaves which are between 6 and 12mm long.
Melaleuca violacea has proven to be very hardy and adaptable over a range of climates and soils although it is not at its best in tropical climates or areas of high humidity. Flowering is best in sunny positions although as an understorey species it takes light shade without any significant deterioration in flowering.It responds to annual fertilising after flowering and to an annual light pruning to encourage a bushy shape. Propagation is easy from both seed and cuttings.
This species makes a most attractive and unusual groundcover where some height is desirable.
Generally Melaleuca are frost tolerant and tolerate heat, hot winds, wet feet, salt air and drought, they are extremely hardy and fast growing, they have very decorative flowers and bark. This species responds to annual fertilising after flowering, an annual light pruning to encourage a bushy shape and under ideal conditions the species is quick growing and makes a good screening plant.
Propagation is easy from both seed and cuttings.
