Melaleuca laterita, the Robin Redbreast bush is an erect, often open, shrub to about 2m high by 1m wide with linear and tapering foliage that is light green to 2cm long and 1 to 2mm wide.
Large orange to red flowers to 8cm are borne in lateral spikes throughout the year with the best flushes in Summer, flowers are usually borne on the older wood on small lateral growths, so care is needed with pruning.
This is an ornamental, frost hardy, bird attracting species that makes a fine feature tree and is best suited to reasonably well drained soil with best flowering in full sun. It is widely cultivated and generally reliable in east coast conditions as far north as Brisbane.
