Lomandra hystrix, commonly known as the Matrush is a well known large tufted grassy species with arching bright green leaves to 1.3m much sought after as a landscape plant with spiky clusters of creamy male and female flowers that appear in the early Summer and are sweetly scented and the heads of creamy yellow to light brown seeds that are very decorative.

This is an understorey plant that is both hardy and attractive and is an excellent soil binder which can take some inundation and is ideal for water features.

Lomandras are versatile, growing in full sun or shade and the leaves will arch over rocks or hide unsightly concrete edging in a water feature, this species can also make a great indoor specimen.

Lomandra hystrix is frost hardy, can grow in poorly drained heavy soil, can take a range of climates from temperate to tropical and is easily and quickly grown from seed.

It can be used as a bush food - the base of the stems are edible, with leaves being used to make baskets.  This species is often confused with Lomandra longifolia which is quite similar, but has its differences.
