This spectacular flowering herbaceous perennial is native to Southern Africa with a clumping and tufting habit with long sword like bluish green basal leaves that are somewhat upright, growing 1 - 2m tall x 60cm - 1m wide.
 
From late Summer through to Spring a long flower spike occurs which is held above the foliage carrying a red bud that opens up from the bottom upward, bright red orange flowers fade to yellowish green, giving the appearance of a two toned flower spike with orange flowers at the top and yellowish ones above.
The flowers are very showy with red and yellow hues hovering over green strappy foliage!
Flowering starts from the 2nd year onwards.
 
It is tolerant of light frosts when established and also slightly salt tolerant.
Best grown in full sun to part shade in well drained soil, tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions.
 
Note that seeds require cold stratification for successful germination and are best sowed in Spring.
