Impatiens balsamina - Rose Balsam - 30 seeds

This old fashioned beauty grows 15cm - 60cm tall with showy coloured flowers, grows as an erect sparsely branched tender annual and makes a great addition to gardens to give a coloured cottage feel!
 
It has elliptic to lance shaped, softly serrated light green leaves and cup shaped double flowers to 5cm in diameter with incurved spurs, this variety has purple to pink coloured semi trumpet shaped flowers with white throat borne singly or in small clusters in the leaf axils.  Flowers are followed by light green, explosive, hairy seed pods that readily self seeds.
 
It is reported that the leaves, shoots and seeds are edible when cooked and also can be used medicinally.  A dye is also obtained from flowers (usually the red ones) and leaves, then the prepared liquid has been used in place of Henna for dying finer and toenails red.
 
Best grown in moist well drained soil that is rich in organic matter in full sun to part shade and prefers subtropical, tropical to warm temperate regions.
This is a low maintenance plant that is great for shady beds, as border plants, in cottage gardens, garden edging or containers.
