Hardenbergia violacea Shrub Form - Native Sarsparilla - 20 seeds
Hardenbergia violacea, commonly known as Native Sarsparilla is usually a trailing or climbing plant but in this case it has a shrubby habit reaching up to 1.2m in height. Flowering in late Winter and Spring, this shrub has narrow lanceolate leaves up to 7.5cm long in a deep dark green and profuse purple pea flowers in long sprays.
It is easily propagated from scarified seed and is hardy in well drained soil in a sunny or part shaded position and will withstand frost to at least -7°C. It is often an answer for cover for that difficult area that does not get much sun, and is excellent as a garden specimen.
This climbing species is well known for its vividly coloured, pea shaped petals – but did you know the leaves are edible? You can crush and boil the leaves to make a tea similar in taste to green tea!
