Hardenbergia violacea, commonly known as Native Sarsparilla or the Climbing Pea Flower is a trailing or climbing plant that can double as either a screen plant or a groundcover.  Flowering in late Winter and Spring, this climber has narrow lanceolate leaves up to 7.5cm long in a deep dark green and profuse purple blue pea flowers in long sprays.

It is easily propagated from scarified seed and is hardy in well drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position and will withstand frost to at least -7°C.  It is often an answer for cover for that difficult area that does not get much sun, and is excellent for a trellis or smaller pergola.

This climbing species is well known for its vividly coloured, pea-shaped petals – but did you know the leaves are edible?  You can crush and boil the leaves to make a tea similar in taste to green tea?
