Hakea bucculenta is one of about 140 Hakea, all endemic to Australia and varying greatly in habit, leaf shape and flower colour.  This one is an upright narrow-leaved shrub with its tapered orange to red flower spikes 60 - 100mm long presenting a superb visual effect giving rise to its common name Red Pokers.

Although growing to 7.5m in its natural habitat in Western Australia it rarely exceeds 4.5m in cultivation.  It flowers from Winter to Spring, although this is somewhat dependent on location and both birds and bees are attracted to its flowers.

Propagation is easiest from seed which germinates in 3 - 4 weeks.

Good drainage is essential as the plant is susceptible to the fungus Phytophthora cinnamomi, although otherwise Hakea as a family have few problems in the garden.  It is desirable to grow Hakea bucculenta with other shrubs which will provide support from wind, to which it is quite susceptible.

A position in full sun produces best flowering and a compact habit whereas grown in shade it has a tendency to be sparse with poor flowering.  This species tolerates dry conditions and has proved frost resistant to -7°C.
