Eucalyptus pruinosa, commonly known as the Silver Box is a a small growing Eucalyptus to perhaps approximately 10m in height that is found naturally over much of tropical northern Australia, from the Kimberleys in the west to the Gulf country in the east.  Despite this, it is a hard to get species.

It is often a small straggly tree with a solitary trunk in the wild but in cultivation it benefits from regular water and takes on an attractive form.  The bark is rough and light brown to grey, juvenile leaves are 9 to 14cm in length and 6 to 10cm wide and glaucous, that is, covered in a silver grey, chalky film.  They tend to persist on the tree and are produced when the tree is coppiced (when the trunk is cropped back allowing the new foliage to grown on small branches produced on the old trunk) and often the crown consists entirely of juvenile foliage making this a very attractive tree whose foliage is keenly sought by florists for floral decorations.  A good specimen can rival the very popular Baby Blue or Silver Dollar for its attractive foliage.

Mature leaves are oblong to ovate with a grey-green bloom, the flowers are about 1.5cm in diameter, bright yellow and appear from Spring to Summer in Australia and plants may flower when only two or three years old.

Silver Box is tolerant of light to medium frosts, down to about - 4°C and coming from a tropical region with pronounced wet and dry seasons, is capable of withstanding periods of drought.  It is nectar producing and honeyeaters and nectar-seeking birds are attracted to the flowers.

Both foliage and flowers are attractive features.

Propagation from seed is straightforward without the need for seed to be pre-treated.
As with all Eucalyptus it is fast-growing and is best in a well drained soil in full sun.
