Eucalyptus phoenicea is a small tree to around 10.5m with a slender trunk, the adult leaves are lance-shaped with a long thin point, grey-green, 8 - 12cm x 1.2 - 2cm and have a flattened stalk.
An attractive feature of this species is the bark which ranges from yellow to yellow brown, flecked, flaky and fibrous on the trunk to smooth and white or cream on upper branches.

The beautiful bright orange flowers are borne in unusual spherical heads of 12 to 20 flowers and flowering extends over a long period and a wide range of birds and insects find the flowers attractive.

This highly attractive species from the Top End in the Kimberleys and in a small area of tropical Queensland.  Because of its spectacular flowers and modest size the fiery gum makes an excellent feature for tropical and subtropical gardens.  It requires an open position with good drainage, preferably in sandy soil, although this is not essential and it is not suited to cooler, temperate climates.  It is fast growing and early maturing and under good conditions can flower in its second year from seed.

Propagation is easy from seed, which germinates readily.
