Eucalyptus pellita, commonly known as Large Fruited Red Mahogany or Daintree Stringybark is endemic to Australia and occurs on Cape York Peninsula and NE Queensland with an altitudinal range from near sea level to 760m.  It grows in open forest and wet sclerophyll forest, but is also found on rain forest margins and as an emergent in rain forest which is advancing into Eucalypt forest.

Eucalyptus pellita is an important plantation hardwood tree due to fast growth and tolerance for poor soils, that means it is often used for land reclamation projects.  It is a popular hardwood and lumber tree, marketed as Red Mahogany due to its exotic colour and is a hardwood with a fine grain and very attractive red colouring.
It is a versatile wood suitable for engineering applications and for use in construction, due to its figuring, it is prized for furniture and turning.  It has become a prestigious timber owing to its durability, termite resistance and distinctive colouring.

It has a number of other uses, including honey and Eucalyptus oil production, and pulp and paper due to its fine fibres.  High calorific content makes it an alternative energy tree and green investors like it thanks to its fast 10 year growth cycle.
Eucalyptus pellita is tolerant of poor, infertile soils and will grow in sandy or rocky soils, provided they are well drained.
