Eucalyptus orbifolia, commonly known as the Round Leaved Mallee is a spreading, lignotuberous, multi-trunked Eucalyptus to 5m in height with the canopy often reaching to ground level.  It has a scattered distribution, occurring naturally of scattered, disjunct occurrence in the goldfields of Western Australia and in central Australia near the junction of the Western Australian South Australian and Northern Territory borders in association with granite outcrops.

The bark on large stems is sometimes rough, grey, thick and flaky at the base, otherwise Minnirichi on the trunk and branches in a reddish brown - Minnirichi for Eucalypts is a bark type only found in Western Australia, where the outer layer of weathered bark splits longitudinally and curls outwards at the edges but remains attached to the stem at the middle, usually exposing shiny green to coppery unweathered bark.

Branchlets are strongly glaucous (waxy and bluish), adult leaves are also unusual in a Eucalypt being broadly blade elliptical to obovate, 2.5 - 5 cm in length, long, 1.3 - 5cm wide, with the base tapering to the petiole and in a consistent dull greyish green to green, sometimes white with wax.

Flowers are yellow and appear in the Winter. The bud caps on this large-fruited species are an attractive pink to purplish red and make a very attractive feature in combination with the rounded, glaucous foliage and yellow blooms.

This is a hard to get species that combines a number of unusual features in a Eucalyptus (leaf form, low-growing foliage, a rounded form, Minnirichi bark and large attractively coloured bud caps) to make an attractively different item.

It is a drought resistant species and frost tolerance is largely untested in cultivation, but it can withstand quite intense inland cold and should tolerate temperatures to at least -5°C.  It likes a position in full sun and occurs naturally in poor, degraded and well-drained soils.
