This Australian native grows as a Mallee to 8m tall or occasionally a tree to 10m that is widespread across southern Australia from the goldfields of WA east through SA to NW VIC and SW NSW and is found growing on hills, sand, plains, flats and gravel pits on sandy or loamy soil over limestone, often part of a codominant community of Mallee shrubland on red aeolian sands.
It has bark that is usually rough on the lower stems, flaky or fibrous, usually loose grey brown with short ribbons of decorticated bark in the upper branches, occasionally smooth barked to ground level in tones of cream, grey, yellow, pink, brown or copper.
The juvenile foliage is elliptical to lanceolate, 4.5 - 8cm long x 0.4 x 2.2cm wide and are a bluish green to grey green colour, the adult foliage is narrowly lanceolate to lanceolate 4.5 - 12cm long x 0.5 - 2.2cm wide and glossy green.
The flower buds occur in clusters of 7 - 11 and open up to reveal white or yellow flowers throughout the year but the main flush is in late Spring to Summer.
