Eucalyptus nitens, commonly known as Shining Gum, is a fast-growing attractive cold tolerant Eucalyptus with a scattered distribution in the Great Dividing Range and coastal ranges from northern NSW south to the Victorian Alps. It is a tall to very tall tree commonly reaching 40 to 70m in height with a long straight trunk that can be up to 1m or so in diameter.Bark is smooth all over and yellow-white or grey in colour although there may occasionally be some rough bark at the base of the trunk, the glossy green adult leaves are long and thin - lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate and up to 25cm in length and 1.5 to 2.5cm in width. Juvenile leaves are rounded to broadly lanceolate and waxy greyish-blue on stems with a square profile and flowers are white with long stamens.Foliage is sweetly scented.Shining Gum takes its name from the shining effect of the trunk, leaves and buds, the bark is either smooth or rough and persistent at the base, thin, flaky and dark reddish-brown to grey to black and then shedding in large strips to reveal a smooth yellowish, grey or white surface. It requires a site in full sun with a minimum annual (not average) rainfall of 700mm, and more or less uniform distribution with a slight Winter maximum. It prefers cool wet slopes, with best growth occurring on moist loams, although it is also happy in a wide range of moderately fertile basalt, shale, granite or sandstone-derived soils and is frost tolerant.Shining Gum is an excellent fast growing plantation species when grown in areas of high rainfall and cooler temperatures and it is now quite extensively cultivated as a timber plantation tree.Juvenile foliage is used in the floristry trade. This listing is for approximately 60 premium quality seeds shipped on receipt of cleared funds.
