Eucalyptus cordata, commonly known as the Heart Leaved Silver Gum is a variable species that can be a Mallee shrub to 4m or a single trunked tree up to as much as 20m depending on rainfall and altitude.  In cultivation it is more normally a single stemmed lignotuberous shrub or tree to approximately 20m in height and up to 2m in width.  It is restricted naturally to SE Tasmania on the Tasman Peninsula, Maria Island and Mt Wellington in Hobart, at altitudes from sea level to 700m and is found on well developed loams on moist sites.

Bark is smooth and can be any colour from greenish-yellow to white or brown, with green, grey or purple highlights.  Branchlets are silver grey and glaucous (covered in a bluish-grey surface bloom).

Juvenile foliage is heart-shaped (technically orbicular to ovate) 3 to 5.5cm long and 2 to 5.5cm wide and mature crown leaves are also glaucous and heart-shaped, a little longer and wider than the juvenile foliage.  It is this overall glaucous habit and shape of the foliage that gives this tree its common name.

The flowers are white and can be present all year round with peaks in either early Winter or Spring.  Fruit is urn-shaped to about 5mm.
The leaves buds and flowers combine to make an attractive showy presence, foliage is popular in the floristry trade.

This is a frost hardy tree that likes its moisture.  It likes loamy soils with a pH from 6.0 to 7.0 and can take poorly drained soils and coastal aspects.
