Myrtaceae - no shipment to Western Australia or TasmaniaEucalyptus coccifera, commonly known as Tasmanian Snow Gum is a shrub or tree to approximately 10m in height. T his species is one of the Peppermint family of Eucalypts, another frequently used name being the Mt Wellington peppermint (The leaves have the characteristic peppermint odour when crushed).
It occurs naturally in the Tasmanian Central Highlands in areas botanically classified as sub-alpine woodland or sclerophyll woodland and is one of the hardiest of the Eucalypts regularly taking temperatures to -12°C with the danger of permanent damage in the range from -14 to -19°C.Bark is smooth throughout, attractive in a range of colours ranging from white to grey to yellow or pink and bark is often found excoriating in strips from the tree. Juvenile foliage is an attractive broad lanceolate, green-glaucous in colour and adult leaves are elliptic or lanceolate, 5 - 10cm long and 1 - 2cm wide, bluish-grey in colour. Flowers, occurring in Summer and are an intense white, although pink flowers have been known.
Soil types in its natural habitat range from deep to shallow yellowish brown, very stony clay loam giving way to deep, dark brown to black peat.This is an attractive cold climate Eucalypt with some versatility, it can tolerate quite intense cold and drought and salt spray in a maritime environment and can be coppiced and hedged. Being a lignotuberous species it can regenerate after fire or cold damage from its underground tuber. It requires a position in full sun and as it is a shallow-rooting species it is best in a position sheltered from strong winds.Eucalyptus coccifera reportedly grows well in Britain as far north as the west of Scotland.Care should be taken when propagating to follow the propagation notes and ensure that this seed is cold stratified for a period of 6 weeks before sowing.
