This species produces a rosette of narrow, spiny divided leaves to 45cm long having a waxy bluish grey appearance and in mid Summer, strongly ribbed flowering stems up to 60cm long hold a mass of crowded metallic blue flowers. These flowers have long spiky bracts to 2.5cm long in ovoid to globular, thistle like heads on rigid branched stems, the terminal flower heads open first, then the next open underneath and so on, each flower lasting for several weeks and creates a real feature in the garden!
Full sun is essential for this species and tolerates most soils as long as they are well drained and is frost hardy.
This is a species that is becoming uncommon in some areas through its native habitat depletion of temperate woodlands and grasslands, so why not get your own seeds to grow this species yourself!
