This Australian native grows to 4m tall or rarely as a thick trunked Mallee, forming a lignotuber, the bark is rough to the small branches, deeply tessellated and brown to yellow brown in colour.
The juvenile leaves are sessile, cordate, green heart shaped leaves that are arranged opposite in pairs with the stem clasping the leaves, 3.8 - 7.8cm long x 1.7 - 3.3cm wide, adult foliage is dull grey green to yellow green, elliptical to oblong and 2.7 - 7.7cm long x 1 - 5cm wide.
 
The flower buds occur in clusters of 3 - 7 buds per umbel opening up to reveal white flowers in Winter, followed by the urn shaped fruit or a shortened spherical capsule.
 
Found naturally growing from the Tennant Creek, Daly Waters and Barkly Tableland in the NT east into QLD though to the Gulf of Carpentaria hinterland and islands to teh Musgrave area of the Cape York Peninsula and south to Bracaldine, usually on red sandy plains or stony rises.
