Makes a great Bonsai specimen!This US native conifer grows to 50m tall in its native habitat of SW Oregon and NW California, but usually only 12 - 18m tall in cultivation, it has reddish brown bark that is stringy and divided into broad rounded ridges with a slender to broad pyramid formed tree, densely furnished to the ground with frond-like branches. The leaf branches are borne in two horizontally spreading ranks, and more or less pendulous at the ends.The leaves are deep green to a less glaucous green, branchlet sprays are predominantly pinnate, leaves are mostly 2 - 3mm long with an acute to acuminate apex.The pollen cones are reddish purple, 2 - 4mm long, the pollen sacs are red. Seed cones mature and open in 6 - 7 months and are 8 - 12mm wide, glaucous, purplish to reddish brown.It is best grown in full sun in sandy and clay loams, grows well on rocky ridges, coastal climates and near rivers, preferring a cool Mediterranean climates.Of all the major forest trees found in western North America, this species has suffered most from human activity, nearly all old growth forests have been logged and the surviving trees are unfortunately dying from an introduced disease.This is a great choice for Bonsai, large gardens and parks.This listing is for 20 premium quality seeds shipped on receipt of cleared funds.
