Cercis canadensis - Eastern Redbud - 20 seeds
This is the state tree of Oklahoma, and is a beautiful tree with prolific flowering over the warmer months.
It is a deciduous tree growing 6 - 9m tall, often multi trunked with red brown bark that has deep fissures and a scaly surface, broadly ovate to orbicular, dull green to blue green leaves with a pointed tip and papery texture, leaves turning pale yellow to greenish yellow in the Autumn before falling from the trees.
It has pea like magenta flowers that occur in profusion from Spring to early Summer, these are followed by flattened bean like dry seedpods, these can remain on the tree into the Winter.
Found naturally growing in open woodlands, thickets, woodland margins, limestone glades and along rocky streams and along bluffs.
Best in part shade in hot Summer climates in moderately fertile soils with consistent moisture but avoid wet or poorly drained soils in full sun or part shade.
Does note like to be transplanted so plant young and leave undisturbed.
This makes a great specimen tree, planted in groups, as a street tree, avenue planting or Bonsai.
