Awesome bright red powderpuff flowers on an easily grown shrub!
 
This Bolivian native is an evergreen and fast growing, many branched shrub or small tree, growing up to 4m tall x 3.5m wide with broadly spreading branches, it has glossy green foliage with new growth being a lovely bronze colour, oblong shaped leaves that closes up at night.
 
Large clusters of faintly perfumed flowers resemble pom poms or a powderpuff and a brilliant shade of bright red to dark pink occurring throughout the year but usually from Spring through to Autumn. The flowers consist of thousands of red to pink stamens that stand perfectly erect to make up an interesting orb.
 
Best grown in well drained soils in full sun to part shade, responds well to pruning, it is frost sensitive, can handle drought periods but best growth comes from supplementary watering in the hotter months but avoid waterlogged soils.
 
It makes a great garden feature, as a hedge, in containers, as a bonsai specimen and attracts birds, butterflies and other insects.
