This is a subtropical to tropical legume woody and fast growing, short lived perennial, growing as an erect shrub to 3m tall with ribbed golden pubescent stems and trifoliate leaflets that are elliptic to narrow-ovate, 2.5 - 10cm long, the upper surface is velvety and green, the lower surface is silvery green with whitish hairs, both surfaces have small yellow glands.
 
In late Winter to Spring, bright yellow with reddish to maroon pea shaped flowers are bright yellow occur in groups of 6 - 12 in axillary racemes, seed pods that follow in Spring and Summer are green with red striped markings, 4.5 - 10cm long x 0.8 x 1.5cm wide, are oblong and compressed between approximately 7mm long seeds.
 
Grown as a nitrogens fixing species, is edible and used for seed and fodder production, as a green manure, has medicinal uses, windbreak, soil erosion, shade cover for establishing plantation crops, firewood and just as an ornamental species with the pretty flowers that occur en masse that attract native and honey bees.
 
Best grown in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions including very hot regions but is not frost tolerant, tolerates drought and low fertility soils.
