Brachychiton populneus, commonly known as the Kurrajong is an evergreen tree growing to some 15m in its native habitat.  It is found naturally in drier areas west of the Great Divide from Queensland to Victoria and is of the same family as the Flame Tree and the Bottle Tree.

It is a very attractive stout trunked tree with a dense rounded crown, the leaves are often ovate or lobed and up to 10cm in size.  In the Summer it is covered with bell-shaped cream flowers, sometimes with a reddish-brown inside, flowers are followed by masses of dark tan seed boats in the late Summer or Autumn.
Seed can be ground to make a flour product.

It is a frost hardy tree that will grow in most soils and will accept dry conditions - in Australia 250 to 350mm annually.  It is renowned in Australia for being very drought resistant once established, although it needs reasonable water in its first year or two, until the root system is established.  Part of its versatility is its ability to grow in sandy or limestone soils, it is a valuable drought fodder tree as well as an ornamental.
