Acer buergerianum - Trident Maple - 30 Seeds

Acer buergerianum, commonly known as the Trident Maple, is a native to Japan and China. This is a deciduous tree that reaches 6 to 8m tall normally, although 10m is not unheard of in ideal conditions.

It has a delightful rounded crown and an upright bushy form, foliage is the typical three lobed Maple leaf with small variations from some of its cousins that result in it sometimes being described as Duckfoot foliage.

The bark is another attractive feature - exfoliating in scales and plates in an interesting mix of orange, brown and grey. It is a superb feature plant, on the patio or as a landscape tree and simply one of the most spectacular of the Maples in the right climate, with a vivid Autumn display in red and orange.

It is as a Bonsai subject that this species excels - it has a stunning form, interesting bark, attractive visually with its leaf change colours, quickly adopting a mature form and giving a ready response to training in nearly all styles.

Best in full sun, the Trident Maple prefers moist, slightly acid soil, it is drought tolerant and is certainly capable of handling the frostiest of Australian conditions!  It does well in urban conditions as it can tolerate confined root space, pollution, heat and drought however this one has a small problem with heat and harsh sun as it suffers from leaf burn (sunburn) and the colour change in the Autumn foliage is much less spectacular than in cooler climates.
