A really interesting prostrate perennial that is easy to grow with globular flower and seed head!
 
This Australian and New Zealand native can be found growing naturally in SA, NSW, QLD, VIC and has a widespread distribution on coastal sands, alps, grasslands, woodlands and shrublands.
 
This is quite an ornamental groundcover species with some edible and medicinal uses.
 
It grows as an evergreen herbaceous perennial with a prostrate, creeping and stoloniferous habit, growing to about 15cm tall but can be taller if it forms a climbing habit.
 
It has 7 - 9 toothed pinnate leaflets that are up to 12mm long x 5mm wide, the upper surfaces are shiny bright green and hairless, the undersides are bluish green and hairy, the stems are also hairy.
Globular flowerheads with greenish white flowers occur in Spring to Summer on pubescent stems 5 - 10cm long, the fruiting globular head that follows in 2 - 2.5cm in diameter with 1cm long reddish brown spines and backward pointing barbs at the ends.
 
Please note that this species can become weedy as the seeds are spread easily by attaching itself to clothes or animal fur so best to keep this plant in check and cut back spent flowerheads before going to seed.
 
This plant is best grown in full sun to part shade in well drained soils, it is tolerant of salt spray but not saline soils. 
It makes a great groundcover that tolerates some foot traffic and roots as it spreads, for erosion control, soil stabilisation on banks, roadside plantings, makes a good frog and other animal habitat, attracts birds or just grown as an ornamental in gardens.
