Acacia macradenia, commonly known as the Zig Zag Wattle because of the zig zag shape of the stems - they change direction each time a new leaf is formed.

This Wattle is a spreading shrub or small tree ranging in height from 3 to 5m with a spread of 1 to 2m occurring naturally in Central QLD usually on sandy or gravelly soil near creeks.

The flowers are large, bright yellow ball flowers appearing in Winter to Spring, followed by clusters of dark brown, smooth pods.  The foliage consists of smooth, curved green phyllodes or leaves from 12 to 25cm in length. and it has a somewhat pendulous or weeping form.

This is a very showy, frost tender species suited to dry conditions and has been used extensively as a landscaping plant in sub-tropical Brisbane.  As with all Acacia it is a fast growing species, but is not long lived only living for about 10 to 15 years.  It is a useful pioneer species where fast-growing vegetation is desired and then followed by other slower growing species.  It prefers a sunny position in well-drained soil and propagation from seed is easy with more information available on our website.
