Acacia howittii, commonly known as the Sticky Wattle, is a graceful large shrub or small tree with a dense, weeping habit that grows to a height of 5 - 8m.

The flowers are pale yellow balls appearing in Spring followed by the fruiting pods which are 4 - 6cm long and 5mm wide.

The dark green phyllodes (leaves) are 1 - 2 cm long and slightly sticky, hence the common name of Sticky Wattle, this stickiness is especially noticeable when the tree is being pruned.

This species responds well to hard pruning and specimens in the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra, restricted to a height of 1m, thickened up so rapidly that they formed an ideal hedging plant.

With its weeping form and ability to take heavy pruning and shaping, Sticky Wattle makes an excellent Bonsai subject.

Acacia howittii appears to be very hardy in a wide range of soils, it is frost tolerant although some protection for small plants in newly established gardens is recommended.  As with all Acacia germination and propagation from seed is easy with only a minimum of pre-treatment required.
