Acacia genistifolia, commonly known as Early Wattle or Spreading Wattle is a fast growing, spreading shrub reaching up to 2m in both height and width occurring naturally in NSW, VIC and TAS where it grows in dry sclerophyll forest, in gravelly and shaly soils.

It has rigid, needle-like phyllodes, dark green and varying in length from 2 to 5cm - this is a prickly wattle that has a valuable place in the landscape and the garden as a nesting site for small birds.  It bears large, ball-shaped, cream-coloured flowers in Winter to early Spring and is generally quite adaptable in cultivation, responding well to a sunny, well-drained positions in most soils.

This is a very hardy species that will tolerate frosts to -7°C.

Acacia genistifolia is a useful coloniser of bare land, improves soil fertility by fixing nitrogen and makes a good low level cover for windbreaks or a barrier plant.  It is very hardy, withstanding extended wet or dry periods and heavy frosts and is a valuable habitat and provides protection for small native birds and other mammals as well as attracting bees and insects.
