It has a pyramidal habit when young becoming upright with a spreading and open crown with age.

The young bark is grey and relatively smooth, darkening with maturity.

Yellowish green catkins occur in Spring as the new leaves with a pinkish hue unfurl along with the acorns that start off green and turning pale brown are are partly encosed with a bowl like hat!  These acorns can take up to 2 years to mature so seed is not often available and the time to buy it is when it's un stock!

It is easily grown by seed, sown in mid Autumn to early Winter.

It tolerates poor soil, wind resistance but prefers well drained fertile sandy acidic sites with dry to medium moisture content.

Quercus coccinea is definitely a long term investment and its true beauty will not be seen in our lifetime but one for the generations ahead of us, it is a great tree as a feature, shade and for large areas, also a perfect as a Bonsai specimen!
