Passiflora coccinea, commonly called Red Passion Flower, is a tropical, tendril-climbing, evergreen vine from South America that typically grows to 2 to 3m and 1 to 1.5m in width. It is primarily grown for its beautiful flowers producing extremely showy scarlet red to deep red passion flowers 8 to 10cm in width. This is without a doubt one of the most attractive flowering Passionfruit but sadly it is not often available, flowers are followed by small rounded melon like fruit to about 6cm in diameter with deep green with lime green markings. The fruit is edible, although it is not a prime eating candidate and pulp is best used for cooking, stems are clad with single, doubly serrate, oblong, medium green leaves to 12cm long.Hummingbirds and Butterflies are attracted to the flowers which are needed to pollinate the flowers.Passion flowers have an acquired religious significance that dates back to the 1700's when early Spanish settlers interpreted various parts of the flower to be symbolic of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, hence the common name.As with all Passionfruit it likes a well drained soil enriched with organic matter, will grow in most areas of Australia but needs protection from frost when young. In cooler areas it benefits from being sited on a north to north westerly facing wall in full sun and appreciates mulching and regular weekly deep watering during the hotter months.15 premium quality seeds shipped on receipt of cleared funds.
