This Aussie evergreen native grows from 8 - 25m tall x 5 - 10m wide in its native habitat but usually only up to 15m tall in cultivation with a lovely spreading habit and creamy brown, thick, soft papery bark, leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, 30 - 70mm long x 8 - 24mm wide, usually with 5 prominent longitudinal veins and the leaves are cineole-rich.
 
A profusion of creamy white to creamy yellow bottlebrush flowers occur from late Summer to Autumn, the flowers are many flowered bottlebrush spikes, 2 - 5cm long, these are followed by broad cylindrical capsules, 4 - 5mm diameter.
 
This species occurs naturally from Cape York, QLD through to Sydney, NSW and also in Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia, preferring tropical, subtropical and warm temperate climates and found growing naturally in coastal swamps and around lake margins.
 
Best grown in full sun in well drained soil but tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions including dry and boggy soils, alkaline and salty conditions, it is drought and lightly frost tolerant. It is also fire tolerant and reshoots quickly after bushfires from epicormic buds.
 
The trees attract nectar feeding birds, bees and other insects and make a great impact tree for large gardens, a windbreak, street tree, coastal plantings, privacy screen and even trained as a Bonsai!
