This North American native is a moderate to fast growing deciduous tree that grows 15 - 20m tall x 7m wide with a oval shaped habit, aromatic bark with bright green, soft lobed leaves that turn yellow in Autumn.
 
When the tree reached 5 - 7 years of age, erect pale green or yellow Tulip like conical flowers with orange centres borne in clusters held in the upper branches in late Spring to early Summer.
Cone shaped fruit is 5 - 8cm long appear after flowering.
 
Best grown in deep, well drained, moist loam, slightly acidic soils.  Part shade is better than full sun as the tree will grow shorter and can suffer from leaf scorch in full sun.
Supplementary watering during extremely dry periods is necessary.
 
This large ornamental tree is a host plant for caterpillars, attracts wildlife and is pollinated by beetles and bees, often used as a honey producing tree yielding a dark, reddish and strong flavoured honey.
It is resistant to moderate drought, pests and wind as well as air pollution.
 
Makes a great feature for wide lawns, as a feature tree, parks, gardens and shade tree as well as a Bonsai specimen.
