Myrtaceae - no shipment to Western Australia or Tasmania
Eucalyptus viridis, commonly known as the Green Mallee, is one of the most widely dispersed of the Eucalypts, growing in semi-arid regions of Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia. In the wild it is normally a small multi-trunked Mallee from 2 to 9m in height although in cultivation with better water and soils it is normally a single trunked tree that can grow to 9m tall.
The bark persistent on lower trunk, grey to dark grey, fibrous-flaky, smooth above, grey or grey-brown, shedding in short ribbons.
Its common name comes from the leaves which are usually a dark, intense, lustreless green.
The flowers are creamy-white and can be abundant, flowering times can vary but is generally Spring to early Summer.
Green Mallee is a big honey producer in New South Wales and it is an important Eucalypt used for the distillation of essential oils. It is also surprisingly interesting and different when cultivated and coppiced (cut back heavily to promote new juvenile growth from the lignotuber).
It grows in areas with low rainfall, high Summer temperatures and few winter frosts, but also grows well in southern temperate areas. It can be found in a wide range of soils, from poorly drained clays to well drained sand and this tree is drought hardy once established and tolerates moderate frosts.
