This is an Australian native tree growing to 20m tall, often with an erect or crooked habit with smooth bark that is often powdery, mottled grey, white, yellow,cream or pale orange with scribbles that are left by larvae of moths of the genus Ogmograptis.
 
Juvenile foliage is lanceolate to falcate or ovate, blue green to dull green and 5 - 17cm long x 2.5 - 8.5cm wide, adult foliage is lanceolate to falcate to ovate, glossy green and 6.5 - 20cm long x 1 - 3.5cm wide.
 
Flower buds occur in clusters of 7 - 15 per umbel opening up to reveal white flowers in Spring to Summer.
 
Occurs naturally in dry sclerophyll woodland on shallow infertile sandy soil on sandstone, woodlands on the central NSW east coast between Sydney north to Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley north through the coast, Tableland and western slopregions to Gympie and Bundaberg in SE QLD on sandy well drained soils.
 
The foliage is browsed by Koalas, the hollow logs are used by native fauna and attracts birds, butterflies and other insects.
