Eucalyptus mitchelliana commonly known as the Mount Buffalo Sallee is a small tree growing to 15m in height, with smooth bark, shed in strips and patches. Adult foliage is narrowly lanceolate, petiolate, more or less symmetric, to 14cm x 15mm in length and glossy green, juvenile foliage is lanceolate, petiolate, to 10 x 2cm in length, glossy green, initially opposite then alternate.
Bark is smooth and white to grey in colour and buds are more or less cylindrical, to 8 x 2mm in tight groups of 7 or more with the operculum (bud cap) conical and pointed. Fruit is cup-shaped, to 7 x 7mm and in tight clusters with 3 valves at the level of the rim.
This is a rare species, native only to Victoria and found only on the Mount Buffalo plateau in the Mt Buffalo National Park in Victoria where it grows amongst granite outcrops in conjunction with Eucalyptus pauciflora ssp pauciflora. Its natural territory is high rainfall country from 502 to 1238m, just below or at the snowline. Temperatures there are generally cool with summer maximums from 21 to 29°C and winter lows from 0 to 2°C.
