The Gippsland Mallee, Eucalyptus kitsoniana, is variable in its form dependent upon its site and is primarily a coastal species that occurs east and west of Melbourne it is found in a range of habitats. 

 

It grows as a small, compact, upright tree to possibly up to 8m on good well-drained sites, it can also be found in shrubby or Mallee form in less favourable boggy and waterlogged conditions - this is one of the few Eucalyptus suitable for wet or peaty soils. 

 

It is a fast growing species, frost hardy and suitable for Alpine areas as well as coastal aspects and has smooth grey bark with leathery leaves to 10 -15cm, the juvenile and adult foliage being markedly different. 

It produces white flowers in Summer.

 

This species coppices well and has ornamental appeal on good sites and makes for a useful windbreak in any of its favoured conditions.
