Betula pendula - Silver Birch - 100 Seeds
Betula pendula, also known as the European White Birch, European Birch or Weeping Birch is a native of Asia Minor and Europe. It is a slender deciduous tree with a pyramid-shaped or spreading crown of long, drooping branches growing up to 18m in height and 25cm in diameter. The bark is white and flaky and often peels into papery strips like its close relative, the paper birch (Betula papyrifera).
Its leaves are pale green and triangular and doubly saw-toothed, this fine leaf form has tiny leaves some 2.5cm by 2.5cm making it ideal for Bonsai. In the Autumn it gives a great colour display with the leaves changing to orange-red and then to a deeper darker red.
It is normally grown as a feature tree for its grown for its ornamental white bark and makes an excellent Bonsai subject.
Best in full sun, it is easy to grow from seed, it is adaptable to most soils although it needs good moisture for best growth. Ultimately frost hardy, it does not appreciate excessive Summer heat and in Australia is best suited for cooler southern climates.
